Nicole Ari Parker is an American film TV and stage actor who was famous for her portrayal as the spirited lawyer Teri Joseph in the Showtime show Soul Food. Nikki Kodjoe became her stage name following her marriage. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland she showed an interest in acting from when she was a child and won the Best Actress prize at an Maryland high-school competition. After working in theater and 'The Washington Ballet Company she earned a certificate in acting from New York University. Contractor was born in Mumbai in India and grew up in Nigeria through the age of seven. She was already exposed to many different travels and cultures from a early age. After attending boarding school for seven years in London, her family relocated to Toronto Canada where she spent much of her early years and early adulthood. In Toronto, Contractor excelled in academics and became a classical ballerina. She was a student at the Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto, a school of the arts that focuses on theatre and dance. Contractor began acting at age 16, following nearly 10 years of dance. As she finished high school and was awarded an all-inclusive tuition grant to the University of Toronto where she pursued theatre studies with a double degrees in Sociology and Psychology. Contractor, who had been a student for a year, went on to audition at an open call for Pericles which was held at the highly acclaimed Stratford Shakespeare Festival, [Ontario Canadawhich she won the role. The play was well-received throughout the 92 productions that she performed in. She won the award in 2002 for the best production of the Year by Canadian Critics. The actress accepted an invitation to enroll in Stratford's conservatory, a program where only four men and eight women can take a 20 weeks crash program in classical theatre. Contractor was guaranteed a spot in the following season of shows and eventually landed the role in the role of Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
